Research: Video

Next, I was trying to look for the counter arguments in instant messaging. The only problem I found with instant messaging is it takes all the personal communication out of our society. Good social skills I think is a great thing to have in the future. This is a funny clip from the movie Mr. Deeds and its true that you really don't know who you are messaging with, it could be anyone for all we know.

This article talks about the AOL instant messaging service compared to the MSN instant messager and what I was more interested in this article was some of the new features that AIM had put in their server. Like caller id so when someone calls you, it says their number and gives you an option to ignore it or select from a variety of messsages to play on the machine. AIM is a clear cut favorite with over 25 million subscribers in the US while MSN has less than 8 million.

Although this is not referring AIM directly, it does talk about instant messaging in general. It says here that people can have "half a dozen simultaneous IM conversations through a cascade of pop-up windows on his computer screen." The article's author even says " "IM is the most convenient way to consult co-workers and solve a problem quickly, I find it indispensable."

Research: Interview

I interviewed a few people about the social networking AIM and all the users had a positive attitude towards it. One of them even admitted that it was because of AIM that he was able to have a girlfriend. Others find very useful when they wants some quick information from politics to sports through the AIM-bots.

Thesis

AOL Instant Messaging in the best instant messaging program in terms of privacy and how easy it is to use.

I'm also going to open accounts on the many different instant messaging programs I don't already have to test them out as well.

Assessing Wikipedia Entry

I knew AIM was kind of popular but its posted that more than half of the US uses it for an instant messaging device. I worded my assessment before a little wrong and should have been more clear in my statements. The privacy part is a little worse than I thought at the beginning since anyone can add another as their buddy without the person's approval but that can easily be solved by just blocking everyone except the friends you add personally. Although messages are not totally private and anyone can have access, it is better than myspace or facebook where anyone can read what someone else wrote to you on your page.

Social Network Assessment

I chose AIM out of the other types of social networkings. AIM stands for AOL Instant Messaging and I believe this is the quickest and best way to communicate with your family, friends, and anyone else you decide to put on your buddy list. It is a chatting tool which is very easy to use.
-AIM is used by about everyone, from little kids to adults, unlike other tools like myspace or facebook which are used mostly by teenagers.
-it is used just like twitter as well because everyone can have a message next to their name which tells everyone what they are doing. Many phones have the AIM option on it so it easy to let others know whether you are available to chat or busy doing something else.
-It is very useful to communicate with anyone you want and I believe better than other networks since only the person you send the chat to can see your message. It also has a webcam option for family and friends that are not close to each other.
-there really isn't anything private y0ou can find out through AIM as it is only used for quick messaging to one certain person and AIM doesn't require you to put your email or post all of your pictures on it for everyone else to see.

Assessing Technology Articles

This is not an authoritative source because there isn't much information given about the author and his points may change because of the difference between our times and his. There was no connection between Huxley's "Chemical Persuasion" article and technology. He wrote this in the early 1930s so technology has advanced greatly since then and all his views are about drugs. Nothing about technology was mentioned but there can be a lot of technological advancements because of drugs which include:
-chemicals used in war
-nuclear weapons
-weapons
-household products
-effects of exposure to certain chemicals
-medicine

2/24/09 Interview Transcription

For my interview about the California budget, I decided to interview my friend Omar Aziz and how the new California budget was going to affect him and his family. He seemed to know a lot more about this than I did.
AH: What do you think about the new budget being passed?
OA: This is definitely something that is good for the state of California. At first people might be against it because of taxes and I know California will save millions of dollars in this year alone.

AH: How does this effect you?
OA: Since I go to a state college, there is a good chance the tuition will increase for next semester and if the budget helps us get better jobs which pay more then it shouldn't be a problem but that is something I am not looking forward to.

AH: Has anyone else in your family been effected by California's huge deficit or the economy?
OA: My mom was laid off a couple months ago from her job working in a tire factory and I am pretty sure that is because of the economy but it was a good thing I do not live with my parents anymore so they don't have to waste any of their money on me anymore.

AH: How long do you think it will take California to get rid of the deficit?
OA: I don't know if California will be able to take care all of the money problems it has but we should see improvement in our economy within a year or so.

2/24/09 Newspaper Article Summary

I am not someone who is big on politics or follows the news very closely. So I tried to piece together what it means to finally have the California budget pass. First of all this means a tax increase to make up the $42 billion budget and also spending reductions and revenue increases. California will also borrow money which I don't understand how that is going to help. The term "ugly budget" was used and although it is not a perfect solution, it keeps people working. There was a struggle between the Republicans and Democrats over passing the budget and the Democrats needed at least one Republican to vote for the budget to pass. The Republicans are against budget mostly because of the tax increases and finally Senator Abel Maldonado voted for it.

I believe for any image or article to be successful at filling their purpose, it must reach us emotionally. The tone of the message must be strong and forceful as if we there is no other choice and this is the only way. It must be precise and get to the point very quickly. Today, it is much easier to...

No Troop Surge in Iraq

Bush called for a surge of troops to Iraq a couple years ago in order to help the troops that are already there. He miscalculated how much time it would take to accomplish his goals in Iraq and I don't think we should supply any more troops. I realize it is too late to get out of there now but slowly we must go in a different direction....

2/17/09 Inaugural Address

First of all what caught my attention is President Obama has a certain of voice like he is so confident in what he is saying and believes in it more than anyone else. That confidence makes him much more appealing. Obama also uses certain events that hit everyone in the US emotionally. When he said "homes shattered" I thought of Hurricane Katrina right away. Also when he mentioned "losing jobs" that made me think of the economy and I'm sure we all know someone who has been affected poorly by our current economic state. He also uses the word "we" which makes us think he is directly talking to us and our family like we know Obama personally. When he talked about how his dad wasn't able to get served in a restaraunt sixty years ago and now his son is the president, that was interesting because he put his personal life into speech. Obama just has that certain charisma that makes him such a good public speaker that I haven't seen many people have.

Reflection on Changes

I like this type of class more than the old fashion way one since I'm on my laptop and surfing the web anyways so this will be a lot easier to get homework done. I have never used any of these two sites before but it looks pretty straight forward and easy to get accustomed to. It's kind of weird to have others read your writing and that is the probably the only part I don't like.
